I am truly chomping at the bit to get out of the gate and onto the Convention Circuit! This year I begin in one of my favorite states - ARKANSAS!
I will be visiting Arkansas several times this year (in fact my first two events are there) and look forward to visiting old friends and making new ones.
First stop on the PIXIELAND tour is Ark-con! This is very exciting for me as it is a first year convention dedicated to GAMING! My love of gaming goes back several decades and into the murky past of my childhood.
Jennie Breeden, ArtistOne of the great things about Ark-con is that I get to meet Jennie Breeden, creator of a daily autobiographical web-comic called 'The Devil's Panties.' I know it sounds dirty, but it really is just the adventures of a funny, geeky girl who is just looking to make it as a comic artist.
This comic strip is an ongoing work of art basd on real life. I would even venture to say, it is the fact that her work is based on real life which makes it such a power piece of modern art. As most of our lives are Not Safe For Work, most of the comic is pretty clean but suggestive at times, and Jennie, being a true artist, also does drawing of live models occasionally nude.
Do not let this keep you from enjoying this ever evolving true story that is a wonderfully crafted work of art that all of us geeks can relate to.
Straight Outta Comicon will be there to put on a show that is a hybrid of stand up comedy, music, improv, and sketchwork with two lifetimes of geek and gamer knoweledge delivered by two critically acclaimed comedians.
Also appearing will be the Gaijin Goomba. He is the creator of Game Exchange; A show that taught about cultural influences various other countries gaming culture with a large focus on Japan as many games come from there. He is also a member of the Game Theorist Channel.
Another very exciting guest is Robin Roberts! She is professor of English and Dean of the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas. The author of five books on gender and popular culture, she has written on women in science fiction, Star Trek, and Anne McCaffrey. She has offered courses on science fiction for more than twenty years, and is currently working on an online course combining science fiction and astronomy.
And I would be remiss if I didn't mention that the 104th Legion would be on hand as well!
Of course, it's a GAMING convention so there's plenty to do! If you LARP, there are TWO games running: Dragon Crest and Vampire: The Masquerade. Both look to be a great time!
Our buddies at Tradwind Games will be a variety of tournaments all weekend long and Artemis, the Space ship bridge simulator will be open to feed your desire to be on deck. There will also be card games, board games as well as Cosplay and so much more to do!
If you just need some down time, the Video room will be running all weekend as well. Finally, there are going to be tons of panels to share and learn from.
